UNNATURAL SHOCK OF THE DAY: (Courtesy of R.S. who brings us within 868 of our glorious goal. )

That Roger Federer was genuinely happy (and fortunate) to win a close match against Gilles Muller.

AMAZING ACHIEVEMENT OF THE DAY:

Federer is in his 18th consecutive Grand Slam semi-final. To put that in some perspective: That means he hasn't missed a Grand Slam semi-final since before John Kerry declared his candidacy for the Presidency in 2004.

TEDDY VEGAS END OF WEEK INTERACTIVE FEATURE OF THE DAY:

Or since ____________________.

OBSERVATION OF THE DAY:

In the absence of any real consistent theme to his campaign and in the fact of his many competing objectives, McCain has resorted to a sort of Rorschach strategy--wherein he says enough contradictory and fragmentary things to allow each of his many incompatible constituencies to see the candidate they want or need to see. Thus the wingnut base sees a pro-gun anti-abortion right wing conservative. The independents see a true maverick. And the undecided Democrats see a genuinely bi-partisan (or post-partisan) reformer. Anyone who is looking to rationalize a reluctance (racially informed or otherwise) to vote for Obama can find what they're looking for at the super convenient McCain candidate Mart.
